![]() We hit it off right away, and have been in contact sporadically. I met Captain Herbert Raymond McMaster back in March 1990, when I visited the facilities of the US Army's 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment/2nd ACR, in Bamberg, Germany -and I was then a commander, stationed then in Brussels - on the occasion of an initial inspection to study the possibility of a certain number of M60A3 main battle tanks being transferred to the Spanish Army, and other armored vehicles, then stored in US bases and facilities in the Federal Republic and that were going to be withdrawn from service, to be replaced by the most modern M1 Abrams. For all these reasons, throughout these pages I will take the opportunity to pay him a well-deserved tribute as a soldier, as a person and as a friend. In addition, he has He has written two essential books and is a professor at Stanford University.
